Sweet memes are made of this

via [info]missdisco, but my answers will be nowhere near as literary as hers!

1) What author do you own the most books by?
Me: - Nicci French
HL: - Peter Ackroyd
Therein lies the difference in our reading habits LOL

2) What book do you own the most copies of?
I used to have several copies of Lewis Carroll's Alice books

3) Did it bother you that both those questions ended with prepositions?
Not at all. As I understand it, that grammatical rule (as well as the one about not splitting infinitives) was adopted wholesale from the Latin, therefore is not appropriate for English.

4) What fictional character are you secretly in love with?
DS Logan MacRae from Stuart MacBride's series of crime novels

5) What book have you read the most times in your life (excluding picture books read to children; i.e., Goodnight Moon does not count)?
Through the Looking Glass - Lewis Carroll and Collected Poems - Philip Larkin

6) What was your favorite book when you were ten years old?
Fattipuffs and Thinifers - Andre Maurois.

7) What is the worst book you've read in the past year?
If a book's bad, I put it down uncompleted. So, can't remember.

8) What is the best book you've read in the past year?
What's Left - Nick Cohen

9) If you could force everyone you know to read one book, what would it be?
Julie Burchill & Chas Newkey Burden's "Not In My Name: A Compendium of Modern Hypocrisy"

10) Who deserves to win the next Nobel Prize for Literature?
I don't care

11) What book would you most like to see made into a movie?
Happy Like Murderers - Gordon Burn

12) What book would you least like to see made into a movie?
The last Harry Potter - gawd elp us, the films are worse than the books!

13) Describe your weirdest dream involving a writer, book, or literary character.
I once dreamt I was friends with Roger the Dodger from the Beano - does that count?

14) What is the most lowbrow book you've read as an adult?
Several Mills and Boon romances.

15) What is the most difficult book you've ever read?
I don't read difficult books. If I can't get past two pages without yawning, it goes on the unread pile.

16) What is the most obscure Shakespeare play you've seen?
Are any of them obscure?

17) Do you prefer the French or the Russians?
Eh?

18) Roth or Updike?
Neither..

19) David Sedaris or Dave Eggers?
Sedaris

20) Shakespeare, Milton, or Chaucer?
All three are wonderful.

21) Austen or Eliot?
Neither.

22) What is the biggest or most embarrassing gap in your reading?
I've never read any Raymond Chandler, and as someone who's a major crime fiction buff, I guess that's a bit of an oversight

23) What is your favorite novel?
Don't really have one.

24) Play?
The Crucible - Arthur Miller

25) Poem?
Too many to mention but I guess it would be Aubade by Larkin.

26) Essay?
Nick Cohen and Christopher Hitchens have written some fantastic stuff, the titles of which elude me right now.

27) Short story?
Sawbones by Stuart MacBride is a sort of extended short story which I like very much.

28) Work of nonfiction?
She Must Have Known by Brian Masters, about the Rose West trial

29) Who is your favorite writer?
Philip Larkin. I presume I can have a poet? If we're talking novelists, then it's Nicci French who is actually a team of two people.

30) Who is the most overrated writer alive today?
Irvine Welsh.

31) What is your desert island book?
The Red Riding Quartet by David Peace - they're four books but they make one cohesive whole. Maybe if I was on a desert island, I might actually work out what happened.

32) And... what are you reading right now?
Until Its Over - Nicci French
